What an eye opening experience visiting the DMZ was. It is truly heartbreaking the divide that was forced upon the people and their families. I never really understood how oppressed the North Koreans are until the day we saw all of these sites. Along the road these wire fences and watchman posts were a clear visual of the divide.
Our first stop was the freedom bridge. There were all of these prayer ribbons tied to the barbed wire fence there.
The peace bell
Next stop was the DMZ. We walked deeeeep into this tunnel that the North Koreans had dug in preparation for an attack on South Korea. It was discovered before it could be used and that is the tunnel we toured. No pictures were allowed but we got plenty others.
This part of the tour was so sad. Families separated.
I thought this was creepy. We could see this fake North Korean city near the DMZ.
Our last stop was Dorasan Station. This train station was built with the hopes that one day there would be peace between North and South Korea and people could travel freely between the two countries. It’s sad and amazing how hopeful the South Koreans are of unification.
It was a very enlightening day.
We ended our last day in Korea with a train ride and a long walk to the temple!
As we left the temple grounds we were hoping to be able to find a really good, authentic Korean place to eat. Rich stopped to do a little research and who do you think happened to turn the corner? The missionaries! They walked us to their favorite local hole in the wall.
They introduced us to the owner who was a spunky lady who they knew well and you could tell she loved them, even though she was not a member.
The food was SO GOOD!
The next day, we headed to the airport and said goodbye to beautiful Korea and it’s amazing people. Next stop…SHANGHAI!
